Makrokosmos Project, Portland’s hip music festival dedicated to contemporary American music and Pacific Northwest musicians presents its 12th anniversary festival! The event will take place at the urban-chic Pearl district main dance studio space at BodyVox.
This year’s festival is both a celebration of one of the cornerstones of American Minimalism: Terry Riley’s In C, but also C for Community. In C is 53 fragments of guided improvisation over a steady, 8th note pulsation, and Makrokosmos Project performers will teach a few of the fragments to the audience and have the entire audience participate in the performance at the end of the evening. Bring your C pitched instruments to the concert and be prepared for a short crash course right before the performance!
The 2026 festival’s featured keyboard work is Alfonso Peduto’s Fragments for the End of Time. Classically trained in composition and piano performance, Los Angeles based composer Alfonso Peduto's post-genre approach to music-making defies categorical classification, by bringing together idioms from American minimalism, European classical traditions, married with reminiscences of popular genres. With a prolific catalog comprising of close to two hundred published pieces, the main focus of his output has been on creating music for solo piano, multiple pianos and piano with electronics.
Deeply pensive, Fragments for the End of Time is an intimate exploration of emotions through one of solo piano’s greatest forms, the miniature. Alfonso will be joining us at Makrokosmos Project to introduce this cycle of 24 short pianos pieces. In his own words:
Hope the audience will find Fragments interesting, they are definitely the least “composerly” pieces I’ve published- my most informal project- akin to sharing little moments on the side of my piano bench. This year’s festival is highlighting the importance of commissioning and premiering new compositions by featuring some pinnacle recent commissions and premieres from Makrokosmos Project performers: Juri Seo’s Lux, Lumen, Splendor, Makrokosmos Project 10 commission (2024) for DUO Stephanie & Saar Michael Johanson’s Catalyst, written for and premiered by Yoko Greeney and Susan Smith (2016) Alejandro Viñao’s Patterns and Form, commissioned by Portland Percussion Group and consortium (2024) Martin Bejerano’s Fantasia de Tres Mundos (2014), premiered by DUO Stephanie and Saar
Born in Buenos Aires, Alejandro Viñao’s music is characterized by the use of pulsed rhythmic structures to create large scale form, and by a melodic writing which, as in the case of much non-European music, develops through rhythm rather than harmony. Patterns and Form, scored for percussion octet and piano, is Viñao’s exploration of “polyphony of pulses”, where the different instruments come in and out of phase with each other.
In the spirit of the United State’s upcoming 250th birthday, Makrokosmos Project will celebrate the importance of Latin culture and its immense contribution to American contemporary music with the 6pm set being solely dedicated to music by composers of Latin origin: Carlos Chavez, Alfonso Peduto, Ernesto Lecuona and Martin Bejerano.
Makrokosmos Project returns in full force with 4 sets of music over the course of five hours. Audience members can come and go as they please and enjoy complimentary food and wine. Portland Piano Company is the piano sponsor. The 2026 festival wine sponsor is Stoller Family Estate.
