In 2015 composer Ivan Trevino was invited by the US State Department to perform and teach music for a week in Turkmenistan, with his cello-rock band, Break of Reality. Ivan wrote This is Like Jazz! as a response to hearing the rhythmic and metric complexities of traditional Turkmen music, and to time spent with young Turkmen musicians, who were not used to improvising. The contrabass flute grooves in a lyrical conversation with the marimba and spoken word, creating a narrative of Trevino’s time in Turkmenistan. Commissioned by Caballito Negro, This Is Like Jazz! is a co-commission with Joe Perez, Ben Prima/Cathie Apple (Citywater), Dwayne Corbin/Ruth Polcari (Simpson University), Shane Reeves, and Tomm Roland/Christine Beard (Zephyrus).
July 29-30 & August 20, 2016
Crater Lake, Oregon (July 29-30)
Britt Pavilion, Jacksonville, Oregon (August 20)
On July 29 and 30, Britt will celebrate the unique majesty of Crater Lake when members of the Britt Orchestra and Music Director Teddy Abrams perform at the national park. Abrams will lead approximately 40 Britt Orchestra musicians in the performances, with the dramatic panorama of the lake as the setting. The musicians will perform a world premiere composition by New York-based composer Michael Gordon, commissioned by Britt and inspired by Crater Lake. Gordon has visited Crater Lake throughout the past year, to draw on the park for inspiration for his composition.
Joining the Britt Orchestra will be 10 percussionists I am coordinating from the SOU Percussion Ensemble.
We will also perform the work at the Britt Festival Pavilion on August 20. Left Edge Percussion will open the show at 6:45!
