Joining the Britt Orchestra will be 10 percussionists I am coordinating from the SOU Percussion Ensemble.

We will also perform the work at the Britt Festival Pavilion on August 20. Left Edge Percussion will open the show at 6:45!

I am excited to co-present Chicago’s wonderful percussion quartet, Third Coast Percussion. Co-presented by Britt Festivals Education and Engagement, Third Coast will visit schools in Southern Oregon and present a master class and concert at SOU.

Hailed by The New Yorker as “vibrant” and “superb,” Third Coast Percussion explores and expands the extraordinary sonic possibilities of the percussion repertoire, delivering exciting performances for audiences of all kinds. Formed in 2005, Third Coast Percussion has developed an international reputation with concerts and recordings of inspiring energy and subtle nuance.

These “hard-grooving” musicians (New York Times) have become known for ground-breaking collaborations across a wide range of disciplines, including concerts and residency projects with engineers at the University of Notre Dame, architects at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, astronomers at the Adler Planetarium, and more. The ensemble enhances the performances it offers with cutting edge new media, including free iPhone and iPad apps that allow audience members to create their own musical performances and take a deeper look at the music performed by Third Coast Percussion.

Ian Scionti, an Ashland-born musician, will be returning to give a flamenco guitar concert at Paschal Winery accompanied by Terry Longshore, Director of Percussion Studies at Southern Oregon University. They will be performing material from Scionti’s debut album Campo Abierto, released in summer 2015 by the Spanish jazz label Blue Asteroid Records. Scionti’s music mixes elements of jazz with traditional flamenco styles, constantly exploring the aesthetic union between the two and blending innovative arrangements with improvisation. After studying jazz guitar in SF and NYC, Scionti moved to Seville, Spain where he has lived for over a decade, performing both locally and across Europe with different projects ranging from flamenco-jazz to fado, manouche and choro. Longshore, a percussionist specializing in contemporary music and flamenco, is an active performer, composer, and educator. He has studied and performed on five continents, including performances this year in Australia and Montreal.
